Watch out for those ROOTS! Some CW finds & ???

Hey, Hopefully everyone had a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. After the dinner crowd thinned out, I was able to go MD-ing at a CW battleground, which had been beat pretty hard, but I managed to drag home a few items. Some of which I know, and some are ???. I thought the root growing through the eyelet of the flat button was pretty cool. Could the iron piece be something off of a musket or pistol? The photos really don't do it justice. I broke part of the round area off while trying to clean off some rust. Also, I'm wondering if I found a bayonette or not. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Breezie

I think the broken iron thing goes on the end of a chain. when you turn it endways you can pass it through a ring but when you pull the chain it catches sideways in the ring. I do not remember what they are called.

I found an example of what im talking about. This one is on a wagon and is called a rough lock.

Taz, thanks for the help. The Rough Lock has the right shape, but the flat part of this one faces upward instead of outward. (did that make sense? lol) Were these Rough Locks made of iron? Breezie

Old iron, yes. There are different types. Also called Cow Ties.

You need to put the other piece in electrolysis if you think it may be something.

Taz & BCH, I think ya'll are right on the Rough Lock; thanks. Now, what do you think about this disk? It's 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Breezie

I am new to metal detecting, but it seems to look like part of a revolver. just throwing that out there :P

Not part of a revolver, not durable enough. Perhaps a gasket of sorts? Monty

looks kinda like a mounting flange for a 1 and 1/4 steel pipe :dontknow:

I thought it looked like a mounting flange too, but there is no neck, and doesn't look like it has ever been one. What's strange is the circle is made of lead, yet the holes are filled with iron. As you can see 2 of them are missing. They are flush on one side, and somewhat jagged on the other side.

Glad you got out. Looks like you had a good day. I'd have to agree about the one piece being a rough lock. ( never knew what they were called until now. thank you guys) I think the other piece will have to be cleaned to tell what it is. I don't think it is a bayonet though as the bent part ( that looks like it might be the neck from the socket to the blade) looks to long. The lead piece does look like a flange or seal because it had so many bolts in it.

The iron piece might be an artillery trace chain piece (looks similar to the rough lock).

BB, I've cleaned it some more, and it does look like the end piece to the trace chain because the end pieces are wide and the flat part faces upward like the pic below. :icon_thumright: Breezie

LOL I got the same when I searched online. ;D Those are modern cow ties. You need to search the old mail order catalogs. Who says books are obsolete? :D I imagine they (rough locks) could have been used in many different applications and are still used today. I guess a cow tie is the name for the complete chain, ring and rough lock. :dontknow: My book calls it a "toggle." Cow Ties:

Re: Watch out for those ROOTS! Some CW finds & ???

:laughing7: The same thing happened to me when I GOOGLED Cow Ties! Of course, I've had worse to show up . . .like the time I was trying to find pics of the difference between CW sock garters & women's GARTER BELT hooks. I won't post those pics; lol. Thanks ya'll for all the help. It's soaking now, so hopefully more rust will fall off. Breezie

If it's lead it wouldn't be a bearing. If it's steel I would say yes but being lead is why I thought seal or flange
