Water detecting!

Affordable is such a vague term.

There are lot's of comparisons in the head to head section, and everybody is talking about water machines in the Beach and Shallow Water section.

Hang out in the thread there, you will learn lots.

But you have to have a budget or dollar amount to get anywhere near an answer.

Like 700 dollars or so I know the at pro is great I was wondering if there are any other good options

Salt water- Sand Shark/Dual Field (both Pi's)
Freshwater- Tiger Shark/ ATpro

Both- CZ-21/ Excalibur

"affordable" and "water detecting" are often mutually exclusive terms, especially if you are talking about wanting to hunt saltwater and avoid iron trash.

I forgot to add the DetectorPro Headhunter UW

Water metal detecter lol :)

In that price range and if you're going to hunt salt water, I'd try for a good used Excalibur or CZ21, in that order. If your search area(s) are relatively iron free, a PI machine will do the job too. Forget the AT Pro for salt water.

Would brackish water mess with the atpro? Brackish meaning traces of salt in the water I plan on searching the Chesapeake bay and the tidal rivers one day.

I have an at pro and its a great machine. However If I were going to buy one for salt water I would probably go with the sand shark. Your choice , just my 2 cents worth and good luck treasure hunting!

That would probably depend on how "brackish" your area is. When I hunted the Cbay down in Virginia, it was more salt water than fresh....by a long shot.

I would hunt way up the bay around Annapolis more fresh then salt can't even smell it
In the air or barely taste it.

The AT Pro is waterproof to about 10 feet, per Garrett's specs. I've used mine in the rivers and lakes here, and I'm rather concerned that the day will come when its compromised. The ATP is not rugged like the Tesoros or the Fishers. Its a fabulous low-priced multi-purpose machine for land and wet conditions, but I'm sticking my neck out here and saying that its not worthy of someone serious about water-detecting. I know I'll catch some flak over that, so please be kind, guys. :laughing7:

If you are anywhere close to any saltwater beaches I would buy a machine to handle salt then an an AT later if you decide you like detecting. You can use the cz or excal for land detecting too they are just a little heavy and cumbersome. The cz chest or hipmouted is light as a feather. Just ask Casper!

Only detectors for the Bay, xcalibur n cz20'21.. to much trash for a PI, at pro struggles.. save your cash and these will pay for themselves real quick.. need a sifter, scoop and research. The bay is loaded with treasures, the silver gets ate up but the gold lives for ever. Also get the book written by Frank Carter and Bob Trevillion Diamonds in the Surf

Excalibur or Sand Shark, or both. Don't waste your time on a machine that's NOT MADE TO HUNT IN SALT! Trust me...
