I always use a screw driver to poke and if a coin is a inch or so i just pop it out .. Now im getting tired of stabbng the ground to hit the coin but a small shovel just makes to big of a hole in local parks and grass ways .. sure the shovel is great in spots were no one is watching and far out away from public areas .

Use a handheld digger. You can keep probing with a screwdriver and then use the digger or you can get an electronic pinpointer and then use the screwdriver to pop it out.

I use a long handled garden spade, 18 inch handle, 4 x 6 shovel part. Nice and light, you can give it a kick with your foot to dig and it cuts a small hole. I have great pinpointing with my detector and a Propointer, so my target is usually dead center.
