My buddy called me last night asking if I wanted to hunt an 1850s grist mill site this morning.
The earthen dam that held water for it had eroded and the creek it flowed into was lowered for maintenance at the power dam down stream.
Well, we didn't find anything with our detectors but, digging in the sand and silt where the grinding wheels were we found a half of one.
Only problem was, it was 8' below grade and there were only three of us to muscle it out.
My buddy called two of his nephews for help. While we were waiting on them we found another half wheel about ten feet away. These stones weigh about 300 lbs each.
We spent four hours manhandling these things up to my buddy's truck and loading them.
Luckily, a neighbor saw what we were doing and helped us out by providing a heavy rope and a set of ramps to work these pieces out of the creek bed.
Hopefully, tomorrow morning will be an easier hunt at a different site.
In case anyone wants to know, I am the old goat sitting on the tool box in the second picture.

Man good job. That's got to be some of the "largest" finds I've seen.

What are you going to do with them?

I bet those would make a beautiful display right in your own front yard! :o
That's what I'd do and what a great conversation piece :D

:icon_thumright: Congrats on an incredible find :icon_thumleft:

What are your plans for these beauties?
If you opt to display them, whether inside or out, I hope you will take a moment to take a pix & post it :D

No to show my ignorance, but what are you gonna do with them? Do they have value?

Up Here in NH, Lots of folks place them on the sides of driveway Entrances,
Great find!

Some of the deepest finds I have seen...great job, a tough one to get them out. Would a museum/historical society be interested in the stones?

My buddy claimed them and he can have them! I will post a picture after he cleans and positions them. I told him if he finds another one I would give him$20.00 to leave it! :laughing7:

Well, my buddy finally sent me pics of the mill stones in his yard. I think they look pretty good. I may have to go find me some, NOT!!
