You may have noticed that many websites are now beginning to format their images as .webp files. We have Google to ‘thank’ for this, having created the new format ‘for our comfort and convenience’. The trouble is that many image editors don’t recognise the format. Microsoft Edge doesn’t give you an option to convert to .jpg and can only save the file as Edge sees it. More recently, some websites are only using the newer .avif format for image files, which can be equally problematical. Both file types offer a higher level of compression than .jpg to reduce the file size without loss of quality.
For anyone having difficulty, there is an add-on for Edge which gives you the choice to save either file type as .jpg if you wish. You can install it instantaneously from the link below, which also includes a one-click option to remove it if desired:
https://microsoftedge.microsoft.com...mage-as-type/jfgmngngnfnphnmfiljellhnodgfdllh
When you right-click on an image file to save it, an additional option appears near the bottom of the list as “Save Image as Type” which then gives you .jpg as a choice. I expect there is a similar add-on for Chrome, but I don’t use that browser.
Hope that helps anyone else annoyed by these changes.
