Weekend Finds: 1855 "III" Cent and VI Corps Badge and Walking Liberty!

Hey Y'all, well I ended the weekend on a good note but I started it off very slow while Jeff was on a streak and diggin me under the table :laughing9:... Some of you guys might know, the symbol for the VI Corps during the Civil War was a cross. This particular Corps was made up of elements of the 4th and 5th Corps and formally created here where I live on the Virginia Peninsula immediately preceding the Seven Days' Campaign. Many of the sites that I hunt are where elements of the VI Corps camped and this weekend Jeff and I were digging one of these said campsites which has colonial finds layered in as well. After about an hour, I dug the remains of an object that was SUPER Deep ( about 12 inches down). I noticed it had 90 degree angles all the way around and when I brushed all the dirt off, I was looking at the remains of a field made Union VI Corps badge! I was VERY Happy about this find! and by the end of the day ended up getting a 1848 Braided Hair, a couple Eagle "A"s, and a Walker still in the dirt, which was a relief because I had been on a cold streak for the past 2 days prior :P :P

Yesterday, We hit some NEW DIRT ;D :headbang: and at first we started out digging flat buttons but then the good stuff came. Jeff hollered out ONE REALE and about 20-30 minutes after that I dug a jumpy signal hitting in the 40s, dug down about 8 inches and out popped this little silver disc. I knew it could only be a couple things but when I looked close, my suspicions were verified: III CENTER! BOTH the Reale and the III Cent silvers had BLACK over 85% of the surfaces. I haven't encountered silver coins like these in YEARS where the Black was so deep and stubborn. So, I resorted to the last method that I knew would work which was a very small bath in my electrolysis setup. We gave the coins both a few seconds and the black disintegrated right off... It was this or leave them Black, so it wasn't a hard decision which to do.
Thanks you guys for your comments and for looking. :icon_thumleft:  Hope y'all like the pictures, the Walker I dug is still in the dirt clump, looks good to display this way. How many of you guys think I should leave it in and how many of y'all think I should pop it out to see if its a key date?

Hey Nana, the trade token is, I believe, from the early-ish 1900s. It is a N.C.S.O Club token for Fort Monroe. Same size as a silver dollar and cleaned up pretty nice. I haven't really looked yet to see the exact date on it. The little research I did came up empty. Only found a 5 cent token from Fort Monroe....

I know, I've left it (Walker) but its kinda got me wonderin' what date it might be....may end up cracking it out of there :laughing7: :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumleft:

Awesome old coins ya got there Josh  once in a while I'll run across a tough black silver and a short dip in electrolysis will do the trick. Around here the real swampy area's and underneath concrete will tear up that silver. You're right about them Trimes I've found 2 of them but manage to clean them with wet baking soda and a toothbrush.
