It was a beautiful weekend here in central Virginia, so I hit my spot for part of both days. I had arranged to take my Dad on a hunt for Sunday, so Saturday I was just scouting for a new hot spot to take him to on Sunday. Didn't find one, but a few things popped up here and there. The highlight of the day came as I was on my way back to the car, swinging in between two colonial house sites. Got a small but strong buckle reading and dug a Spanish half real! The hole took out part of the date, but under magnification I determined it to be a 1791.
On Sunday I had my Dad with me. He hunted when he was a teenager and wanted to see what a newer detector could find. We hit the colonial house site that's been searched the last five hunts. Just before we got there, I dug a button and showed it to him as an example of a typical flat button. The colonial site is getting thin, but there's still relics to be found. Eventually we moved to another part of the field and dug the two Minies and the .44 dragoon. When I got home and cleaned the "typical" flat button, it turned out to be a War of 1812 era artillery button!
I didn't get a huge haul from the two short hunts, but I had a great time, found a few good ones, and enjoyed being outside with my Dad.
