Well, I think it's a VERY OLD tiny gold ring - UPDATE

I got this very tiny ring this morning on an ocean beach on Cape Cod. It looks pretty ancient to me - like it was fashioned by a blacksmith or something the way it looks "hammered". It is very worn in areas, and it reminds me of what the spanish treasure fleet gold looks like that turns up off the coast of Florida from time to time (one can dream, can't he?). I believe it to be gold, but I guess I need to get it tested to see.

Any thoughts? Here are some pics...

UPDATE: I am back home in California now, and I had this ring tested by my local jeweler, and they said it tested postive for 10K. Before I left the Cape, I spoke with owner of the local metal detecting shop and she said that if it tested between 8K and 10K then there was a real good chance it was a shipwreck item.

My next step will be to track down an expert on shipwrecks in the Nantucket Sound area to see if they have an opinion one way or another. Any other suggestions on who I should contact regarding this ring for a professional opinion on whether it could be from a 1600's or 1700's shipwreck?

Looks like an earring hoop. If it was 1600-1700s it would be 22 kt. 10 kt is more modern-usual modern jewelry amount. But it is nice. Broken rings are hard to pick up with a metal detector.
