Today I went to my pick up bank to obtain my 1 box of halves. Last week I had ordered 3 boxes for the first time with no problems. Ended up having 15-64s--plus several 40%ers and was happy as can be.

Work overwhelmed me this week, so I forgot to call in to order 3 boxes. Instead, I knew to expect my weekly one box. That was just fine. When I went to the counter to pick up my box, the teller asked me what I had ordered. I said just the standard, "1 box of halves, 1 box of nickels, and one box of cents." I wrote my check for $625.00 and off she went to get the boxes. The teller returns with the halves, no nickels, and a taped-up $25 cent box. She says that "they" did not order my nickels. No problem and I thanked her. As I was loading up, the new branch manager comes over. He was a former teller. He informs me that he can continue to order my 1 halves box, but if I want 3, I will have to pay $20 per box. I about had a fit! And, he had all the tellers around me (they had all gathered together I guess to hear what he had to say to me). Needless to say, I felt a bit embarrassed. I am thinking about closing my account altogether. It was highly unprofessional. Thinking about writing a letter to the main bank. I felt like I was some type of bum. It was horrible. To boot, the cent box was taped together from some one else's dumps. They had alway given me a sealed cent box. I am almost 50 years old, a granddmother, and an educator of the young--guess I expected more respect--or at the least, some privacy in the discussion.

Just do your one box for now and lay low. Banks have rapid turnover so maybe in a few weeks you can try to up your orders to see what will happen.
 
I see a new dump bank on your horizon. Keep riding your 1 box a week, get some from another bank and when they cut you off, return the favor by bringing them all your clad. Its as simple as that.

Banks pay fees not only on coins but paper currency as well. If you were to take a few hundred dollars worth of $1 bills to a bank it would require the same amount of work to change that as it would to change $500 in coins. If people allow such discrimination it will get to the point where banks will refuse to cash personal coin collections or impose fees for doing so. I mean it's not like banks make enough money already I can see why they would refuse to provide a service that customers deserve. Considering that on a $250,000 mortgage the bank will STEAL over a quarter of a million dollars from the borrower in interest, I can't be the only one that thinks they are just abusing their privilege.

The bank is under no obligation to carry every single denomination that you could possibly ask for. It is reasonable for them to carry denominations that are the most profitable as long as they can still fulfill your request for cash when you ask for it. It is up to them to decide how to fulfill an order for a $1000 withdrawal. They can choose to use all paper currency or all coins. But they are not obligated to fulfill the order using every legal tender the US has produced in the past 100 years. For example, I can't walk into a bank and expect them to pay me $1000 in Ike dollars. Ike dollars are still legal tender but they are not required to carry them. And I cannot demand that they pay me $1000 in barber quarters either. Yet these too are still legal tender.

So it isn't discrimination because they are legally allowed to choose how they want to pay you using any legal tender at their disposal. You may not like it, but that's the way it is. And although it does cost the bank money to pay you in paper currencies, it costs them to pay you in ANY currency. And it doesn't make sense for them to spend the extra money to keep around all the different types of currencies that someone could possibly want to be paid in. Since most people don't want to be paid in coins they can cut costs by not keeping much coin on hand. It's not discrimination. It's a smart business practice that happens to hurt coin roll hunters.

By the way, this only applies to buying coins from banks. When it comes to cashing in coins at a bank I would think that they would have to accept any legal tender as long as you had an account. But unfortunately, banks are trying to get us here as well.

I am just venting. I am in no way asking for any special treatment. I fully understand what "capitalism" is in a democratic society. You are preaching to the choir. What I am upset about is the treatment I was afforded. It does not matter that a business can elect to do business with me--as several of you have correctly pointed out--but it is the manner in which they did so. From my part of the woods, so to speak, it is considered heresy to accost an individual at my age with such blantant disrespect. Perhaps it is a southern custom, but it is one that is traditionally upheld. I have been taught, that grace is a virtue. To deny one a service is acceptable if one knows how to go about it in the correct manner. All I was asking for is a respectul response. Otherwise, I would get out my belt and wear the pants off the teller. Then, I would say with my best southern draw--"Sir, I thank you for abiding me in my time of need, thank you ever so much for your gentlemenly response." We have customs throughout our great nation. In Texas, I will be damned if we will not live up to ours. Yeah, I know that last sentence was not "lady like" as my grandmother would tar the heck out of me for saying "damned."

I agree I can pick up about anywhere Id dump all over em my 50 cents lol
 
I found out branch managers can do practically anything they want, up to closing your account with No explanation, happened to me, got a Certified letter one day from the bank, blah,blah,blah, we're closing your account, I'd had this particular account for 7 years, as of XX/XX date, we will no longer accept deposits or transactions on this account, so I go to the main branch, sign in, sit down and talk to one of the reps, she was surprised when I told her I got a letter stating the above, she'd been there 3 years, and never heard of the bank closing a customer's account without warrant, I asked to speak with a VP, (the one that signed the letter) wasn't in of course, spoke with her asst., she was useless, of course she gave no excuse, only kept stating the banks policy and agreement, that the bank OR the customer can close an account anytime they want too, with no reason given, I asked her, how many times does this happen? you close someones account for no reason? she said it happens all the time :laughing7:, yea right, while the rep that was helping me said she's never seen it, and she'd been there 3 years....So best thing is to move on, but it is Disgusting
 
My landlord, who works at a Credit Union, told me that they will "sell" off bags of loose coins to their "carriers." The carriers charge a fee to pick up these bags of loose coins.
I told him that I'd be interested in saving them money by purchasing these bags of coins.
The bank will dump rolled customer coins, sans the paper wrappers, into these bags. The bags are each of separate coin denominations; eg pennies, nickels, etc.
I've done pretty well with these bags.
