I believe your coin to be possibly an English Pound or similar coin from the English Civil War Period. (See Photo Below)

The condition of the coin and its year of minting is significant for the area that it was found. From what I have read, there were no English colonies in that area for about 100 years after the mystery of the disappearance of the Roanoke Island Colonist in 1587.

The location of your coin could be valuable to historians in the area. I believe you are safe in ownership. I am not aware of any antiquity laws in North Carolina that would have it removed from you but you can check that out. If you are comfortable in that, I would contact an area historian to see what would have been in that area during the 1640's. Your coin is in such great shape, I would believe that it was lost not long after it was minted.

If what I believe is true, your coin could be much more valuable that stated given the location of the find. If there was someone with you during the hunt, I would go to some effort to insure that you have them sign a document in the presence of a Notary Public and even make a video stating the facts of the find for future reference should you decide to sell it in the future. What ever you do, DON'T CLEAN IT!!! The last steps would be to have it authenticated and graded by ANACS or PCGS and then place it in a safe location for the future.

Take Care,

Jim

Nice Hit

Nice hit, Scooter :D
I have that coin in my collection, but didn't know it could be worth that kind of money. Would like to have that pawnshop guy take a look at my stuff. Can you tell me the shop's name and location? I live nearby.

Thanks,
Beachhugger

Re: went to the outer bank--Great Find

Congradulation on you recent find. If anyone ask you where you got it, tell then it was in your Great Great Grandfathers poscession when he died and was past down in the family. If that doesn't goes back far enough add another Great to the foremost list. goldnugget-Richard-gosports1@aol.com Charlotte, N C
