Welcome to the hobby and the forum. Unless you just want to detect grass, about anywhere people have been works fine. If you head for the dry sand beaches you will do OK with any land unit. However, for the wet sand, you will need a detector with a salt water mode so it will remain stable. Other than that, visit thegoldenolde.com/ for more learning on beach hunting.

Hey Devon I am a newbie too
I spent a three day getaway over there hunting near Pier 60. I must have met 8 different water guys while I was there. I also saw at least 10 guys who are dry sand only. I bought a Whites PI Pro and had a great time (most of the guys are using Minelabs) I think I got a good value for what I wanted. I found a bunch of stuff mostly junk but I did hit a gold necklace. It was my first trip into the water and I have been detecting on land for about 10 years off and on. I learned allot about my PI Pro. I love the machine, I do dig a lot of bobby pins and some iron. Its not so bad I am in my late 30's so it’s a good workout. I have had my detector for less than a month and have done pretty good. I have 2 gold rings 10K and 1 silver ring and a nice necklace to show for it. If i ever hit enough gold to justify another machine I think it would be a Minelab.
