Cumberlands are so rare that most artifakers have never even seen a real one. Here is an authentic example my buddy found in KY in the epicenter of their distribution. It is Carter Cave. Take a good look people. This is the real thing and represents literally thousands of hours of searching.

Now THAT one is amazing! People ooh and ahh over the skill it took to make a clovis or even really tiny notched bird points and what not but these to me represent the absolute pinnacle of flintknapping art in the Americas.

Man it amazes me how they can make a the flute on the sides the length of the point. Thats a really awesome point. Many thanks for sharing.

Nice piece Chuck! You're right, real ones are more rare than hens teeth.

Thanks fellas! I will pass the nice comments on to him. There is actually a fire pop at the base but, the piece is still amazing. I wish it were mine.

Heat stress popped off the whole base or just part? Would like to see a pic of that end too.

I'm fixing to have to put on some floaties..we're getting too much water in Okieland.

Matt that is exactly it. The whole base is gone. It popped rather evenly. I do not have a pic of the base but, I am sure I can get him to take one. I still love the point and make him get it out so I can drool over it about every other time I visit.

There are no words! :o

Oh Yeah, there ARE words, and the initial post said them all.

"Take a good look people. This is the real thing and represents literally thousands of hours of searching."

Thankyou for posting that Chuck, close up too, now that's what I call a "REAL" nice Cumberland.

Yep, thats the ticket, I have only found one, its broken badly and I have hunted for a long LONG time!

That flute--man o man--I can only imagine how many attempts went before they perfected the tools and the technique. Very very rare.

If people only really and I mean-- really-- understood how difficult it is to knapp a flute like that then there would be more respect for our ancestors. Hands flipping down!!

I am drooling and I just saw a picture.

Thank you so much

That is one nice point. Broken at the base or not, its fine as hell. I'd love to be able to find such as that down this way. But I dont think they get west of the Mississippi.
One heckuva nice point!!

A Cumberland

Thanks for all the responses and I shall pass them all on to my buddy Rob. It is such a beautiful form and made of such a wonderful material. The guy that found this has found a lot of nice points but, he has paid his dues. He has been collecting for three decades and this is the only "complete" fluted point he has found.
