Well, the Brits owned the "Oregon Territory" which included what is now Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Remember your American history? Fifty four forty or fight!! That was Polk's election motto and when he became president he negotiated with the English and compromised on America owning the territory to the 49th parallel in 1846. In the early 1800s many English lived there but the Americans kept moving in and began to outnumber the Brits who owned the territory.
