I was searching a friends newly purchased older home and found a belt plate. I recognized the shape as it came out of the hole. I was expecting it to be confederate due to the fact it was found in the heart of SW Georgia. We had no civil war activity here so imagine finding a US belt plate. I am trying to look at the history of the home to understand how it could have made its way here. Thanks for looking, Charlie

Some towns down here were occupied by the Yankees after the war and I have heard that the confederates would wear the US plate upside down. Cool find no matter where you find one.

Great find and Save of the U.S. Belt Plate. Maybe this plate returned home with a Confetrit Veteran after the war either having been taken or traded with a Yankee prisoner for a souvenir. Just a thought. GaRebel was right, Confetrit's would sometimes capture US plates from Union soldiers and would turn them upside down to wear them.

Thanks guys. It was definitely a shock. GA rebel, I never thought about occupying northern troops or the upside down wearing. I guess it also could have come from Andersonville or maybe Thomasville, since they moved the POW’s there as Andersonville was threatened. It actually still had a piece of leather attached when I found it. As far as civil war material this is my second piece. I found a red brass confederate infantryman’s button several years ago.. I just can’t wait to see what comes out of the ground next.

Congrats to you! That is in great shape. I was afraid the first response was going to call repro but glad the heavy hitters have weighed in. Can't wait to see what else you find.
