I tried to get out this morning for a hunt in the same field I have been hunting. There is an apple tree in the middle of the field I have not worked around real good. Started that direction and dug a piece of old pocket knife. Before I could get the 20 yards to the tree a light rain started. I had no cover for my control box so knew I had to get back to the house. Decided to take a few more swings in a circle pattern around the tree. About a quarter way around I got a nickel/pull tab signal and started to dig. Out popped a round disk. I was very happy thinking I had finally found another faded out buffalo. Put it away and headed for the house before too much rain came. Got home, rinsed it, and then a quick hot peroxide bath, and another rinse and I have my first Liberty V-Nickel. It is an 1892 under magnification and the right light. It is also only the second 1800's coin I have found in 2 and 1/2 years of detecting. This is starting out as a great year.

nice find its great finding something over 100 years old. Always make me sit back and think of the possible history of the coin or artifact everytime I see these posts. Congrats!

Larsmed,

That is clean as she gets. That is after a good peroxide cleaning. There is just not much there to see. The back is completely smooth without even the faint detail on the front. Just gotta look real close.

CC,
Congrats to you on the 1800's coin! I still haven't found a "V" nickel yet. Way to go.

Nice nickel!

What I've found is the peroxide doesn't really work on nickels. You have to use the vinegar and salt solution, followed by a little baking soda. It gets out the red gunk and lets the highlights emerge. Here are some threads on it in the forum:

I've used this on V nickles before and the results have been great. I've actually been buying cruddy ones on eBay and cleaning them up this way. Definitely worth a shot!

Cheers and HH,

Thanks for the info. I will give that a try and see how it works. If it does I will post pics later. Gotta go get some white vinegar and some more baking soda. Thanks again.

I tried the cleaning method and this is what a came out with. It worked great to bring the color back and now I think it is 1898.

Very cool! Appreciate the before and after pics!

Always nice to break into the 1800's!!!!

Congrats!

UPDATE: Just tried that method on a crudy 1949 Jefferson I found this week. I like the results! Thanks for reminding us about that tip!!!

You're welcome. Happy to help. I love learning how to clean this stuff better...

The V nickel looks nice now! You can also now give it a light coating with Blue Ribbon Coin Conditioner, if you like. I find it gives it brings out some color and a little extra sheen to the coin and supposedly protects it. I think it costs about $20 for a small bottle but will probably last you a long time. You can find it online or ask a coin dealer.

Cheers and HH!
