If you buy new, the detector most recommended for $200 or so is the Garrett Ace 250, I think $212.45 is what I've seen new & expect to pay about $150 used.

Some older detectors are OK, too, & prices vary at auctions like eBay. But the older detectors may weigh more & some don't even have armrests, so they can be more painful after a few hours use.

All detectors can detect gold & silver, & probably meteorites, are they mostly iron? I never studied them & don't expect to find any.

For gold, the ID if a detector has visual ID it might say foil, nickel, pulltab, or screwcap, or zinc cent, due to the various sizes of gold objects & % of gold content.

Hope this is of some help. Good luck & happy hunting, George (MN)

Fisher F2 the Ace is junk.

Themarmot was asking under the Bounty Hunter catagory I thought. One would wonder if his is a general question or is he asking about a B. H. ? D.D.

Bounty Hunter makes some nice detectors for what you want but mainly up in the upper range price range. Many that get the lower BH's always say they want to upgrade and the ACE 250 is the most bang for the buck and they seem very happy with them.

The Fisher F2 is made by the Bounty Hunter people and service from Fisher has been subpar lately. Hopefully it will improve.

this is what I have always heard, never used one but most every long time detector user has said this! must be a nice machine.

This is the first for me hearing a dealer publicly trash a detector, especially in those words.Obviously he doesn't handle Garrett and searching for business and mine he will never get.Recommendations work so much better.

I agree, warsawdaddy! With so many satisfied Ace 250 users out there, I would have to wonder about ReidMan's credability, even if I wasn't an Ace 250 owner myself. I've used my Ace for 2 years now, and I love it! Lots of great finds, and alot of fun!

Any dealer that would say it's "junk", well... I'd have to think any of his other opinions were suspect as well. Recently bought a White's GMT for gold, and I'm really glad I found a dealer I can trust, without biased opinion or ulterior motives.

Sorry I have no feedback on the BH. Just doing some research for a friend.

I'm an ACE fan, since it was the first detector I had...Garrett is good in general. Actually I'm pleased and astonished of my Bounty Hunter Tracker IV, so I think BH too makes great machines...I would take a look at QD II or discovery 2200

Good luck!

It's easy to say something is 'junk' without giving any reasons or experiences to substantiate the comment. It would be nice to back up an opinion with a reason for it, especially an opinion that strong.

I have had my Ace 250 for a year and a half. I was new to detecting when I bought my machine, and I can't imagine starting with any other machine. I have had absolutely no problems with the Ace. It is easy to begin using and learning with it. I have found over 2000 coins, including silver and wheat cents, a few rings and other odds and ends. I couldn't be happier with the machine and would recommend it to anyone starting out in the hobby.

HH,

Dr. Ace
