Kathy, your beadwork looks nice. Have you got pics of your work with the quills? I would like to see some of them.
Here are some more of mine. First is a little layered dragon, then a wood carving that I did some time ago with Hondouras Mahogany, and last a mantleshelf i made when we remodeled. No fireplace: just the mantle.

Thanks for your cool additions Karen! It's amazing how many different talents people have.

Those ARE the quills in my last picture there, the black and white & the plain white shafts are porcupine quills.

Kathy

Kathy, I looked at them again and i see thatthey are the quills i should have recognised them, Having been raised on porkys i should hsve known what they were when I saw them. I'm sorry I didn't recognise them, please excuse me. Have you ever eaten any porkypines? We ate a lot of them when i was a Kid in the upper penninsula.

Ray

P. S.
That was me that the other post. Karen is my wife and is the first part of our email address and also my username
here.

My mistake Ray. No I have never eaten a porcupine......... Beaver & muskrats yes, but not a porky... But my dog has! Ouch..

Yup, those quills can hurt. They do pose a real problem for dogs and I remember our dog getting into them. One day when
I was about 5 yearsold I was romping around with my dog in an area where we had killed a porky the day before. As I rolled over with the dog on my belly, I rolled on a quill. It stuck in my back through a flannel shirt.

When we killed one , my mother would soak the meat overnight in strong salt-water, and cook it the next day. Even with soaking it always had kind of a woodsey taste. They didn't cost anything and it was meat on the table, we wouldn't
pass it up. There were a lot of them in the area where we lived so they gave us a lot of meals. LOL

Neato carving Ray!
I mostly ruin big wood making littler pieces, then stick 'em all back together. ;D
I'll see if I can get a picture tomorrow.

Kathy, I like those quill earrings! Poor dog! gosh.
They look much more interesting than my earrings...

Anybody got quills for sale?

Here's another lucky dog that got him a porcupine. The dog is now OK. If I recall it's a Tnet user's dog.

Never been around porcupines... do dogs learn fast enough?
We got sea urchins here, in the ocean. Nasty sting and infection from the barbs. It scars and never goes away.

I make flutes. These are a couple of rejects I sold the good ones.

rmptr, i've heard of those sea urchins but never seen any. Wow that dog in the pic looks worse than any i ever saw for quills. Some dogs will learn to stay away from them after once or twice tangling with a porky and other dogs just never learn it seems.

Goodguy, those are good looking flutes from what I can see. I love the sound of Native American flutes and have some
CD's of them. Do your's have the same sound? They look like the ones i've seen at the Pow Wows.

Yep same sound but the ones you hear on the Cd's have been recorded with echo effects and other enhancements.

The one on top is a Native American flute. The Bamboo one is a Japanese Shakuhachi

What knd of wood did you make your Indian flute from, Goody?
It looks very nice.

Hello, Trish,
The shape of it and the joint seal are similar to the new square containers that Maxwell House Coffee comes in.
Butthe little chimney is formed right in it so its not that particular container. The bottom looks like it might be that one. I think it is probably made of a similar container. Am I close? or way off? What ever material they are made of, they sure are cute and is a pretty ingenous way to use them.
