It so well hidden..... I have rarely seen a stack wall in front of them on the Cumberland Plateau. It is over the old civil war hwy to Nashville. It faces out of the west wind wid which you seek. I think I will hit it with a metal detector first and take a screen sifter and dig down 3 foot. Charcoal on the floor not much soot on the ceiling. No chert debiitage seen outside or in. maybe a temp shelter... civil war out look is my bet.
Will have to rope equipment down from the top. Located 3 big shelters but time has not been on my side they have flint debitage. Another adventure lol
Any thoughts?

Lol it did not load was on my way to work. Sorry about that.

Ok so all you shelter hunting experts out there.. Have you seen the front with stacked stone before? I will be back their in January maybe late December. I will know then.

Interesting spot. Keep us posted. Good luck!

Hocking County Ohio is full of similar shelters. I never saw any with stacked stone. We would winter camp in them as teenagers. Great fun, never once thought to look for artifacts. Duh!

Yes I know of one in Arkansas that has a stone wall stacked across the front and a fire pit inside.
Found several round balls and bullets inside with my detector.
Haven't been able to get back and sift the rock debris inside

I know of one in the NC mountains near Ashville

Have found artifacts in the valley and just a few on top. I am thinking a civil war spot and possibly a place coal miners set up. I will update this post soon.

A lot of these have been dug in the past... any indication?

No sir and I have dug and sifted many myself for years. I have a stack of all sorts of sifters :)

Cool spot you found. Dangerous place, IMO, with the ceiling falling in large chunks. Widow-maker size, too. Good luck.
2 facts
Sifting down not up
Heard he's got a thick skull. :laughing7:
