What does this to a coin?

These are all modern memorial cents. I can't get a date off any of them. What caused this damage? Are they zinc, does zinc do this in the ground? Or is it something in the soil? I dug all 4 in the same location but different holes.

Lawnmowers will often do this to coins dropped on the ground.

This is typical of zinc. Large zinc bars ate attached to ships hulls so the salty water will attack the zinc first rather than the steel and zinc just erodes away just like these coins.

I have found them on top of asphalt eaten up that way.
