🔎 UNIDENTIFIED What is it?

I dug this in Hampton, VA where I live and am fortunate to have had access to colonial homesteads dating from present back to 1625. So it is difficult and fascinating to try to ID and date everything you did up. This one is very interesting. I think it is a dagger or knife hilt as it has two holes for the pommel to go through and is slightly tapered bottom to top with larger end being on bottom. The figures are primitive looking and seem to show a man holding a shield and spear with the images the same on each side of the object. What do you think? Jim

Given it’s was found in va, even though I don’t see tyranus, that could be an early virtus. If so very cool. Are those skulls around the top of the item?

Guessing, based on size, it is not a handle for a weapon/knife. Perhaps decorative.

And yes….. if you have access I’d take it to the archaeologist. Just make sure that you have an airtight permission (where found) unless you wish to “donate” it to the commonwealth.

Both ends are square and the holes on the side are oval. The larger square hole is at the top of the mans head so it is slightly tapered from top to bottom. The item is heavily corroded so how can I bring out more detail to take better pictures. Some kind of oil?

I had not thought about the those at the top being skulls, very interesting. I will try to get more detail out of it. Got some suggestions?

Too ornate to do that. This thing is brass. Expensive back then. Thanks for the input.

That would be interesting since they probably did do corn on the cob burning over an open fire. But the fact that it is copper and ornate would mean we are dealing with British Royalty. Totally possible here in Hampton Virginia. Thanks for the input.
