From my understanding, yes it would make it dangerous and it shouldn't be handled without gloves as mercury can be absorbed through the skin. I'm not sure if the hardened metal conforms to that principle though... probably to some extent I would imagine.

Its not the most common form of coin coating/polishing for obvious reasons and is more of an old practice.

i hope it wasnt mercury dipped. my wife and kids all handled it....im not worried about me because the damage is done....we used to play with the stuff when we were kids in chem class :tard:
btw...i wont be able to post any closeups of the bell lines as ive been working o.t. last night and tonight and am not home till its dark so hopefully tomorrow i can do it. i really feel this is a FBL as i can see the lines of the bell clearly. and my eyes suck...

I wouldn't worry much about it. The odds are it isn't dipped in anything, let alone mercury. And I'm sure in that form, it won't do any damage. Like you said... people used to play with the stuff just to get a kick out of its density charicteristics (a lot like people used to play with x-rays back in the day in science class).

The last thing I wanted was to scare you. ;)

I only mentioned it because I have run across mercury dipped coins in my dealers cases before. Last week I saw a war nickel that resembled the sheen of your Frankie and asked if it was dipped, and the answer came back yes, a mercury dip. If I recall correctly though, the nickel had a slight increase in thickness, barely noticeable but there if you looked. The raised to lower surfaces on the coin had more of a gradual decline in thickness instead of the normal abrupt one.

So that could help you tell about your coin as well.

no problem dave i wasnt that worried about it......i figured it probably wasnt dipped.....but couldnt dismiss it either....you cant be too carefull these days...but it sounds to me that it is just a proof coin...thanks for your concern and all your help...
