What is a good sweep speed?

My DFX has preset sweep speed of "10" for the programs I use. I never adjust it. I've read that it can be a good idea to lower the speed and slow the sweep to get greater depth. Any ideas on a good sweep speed (beach). How do you determine if you are at the right speed?

a slower sweep (swinging) speed gives a detector more time to reader deeper and more accurite --- common sense tells you that deeper depth and better ID's should occur from this. in heavily hit areas this could help find those faint signal "deeper coins" of quality

Common sense says you should find out the filtering of your machine and adjust accordingly. If your using 4, 5 or 6 filter machines you will need to sweep faster not slower.

The same applies to larger than standard coils. If you have say a Spectrum or XLT which are classed as four filter designs and use a Hot Shot coil (12") instead of sweeping slower (to supposedly allow more time for the signal to travel deeper) you in fact need to increase the sweep speed slightly.

My pace is to walk as slowly as it takes to make one full left and right pass (comfortably--without dislocating my shoulder) with each step.

well faster vs slower type processer type machine of course must be taken into account that is true when thinking of sweep speed of course -- but if one has a slower type processor ---most folks do tend to try to "run" too quickly --whipping left to right rapidly in a effort to cover as much ground as possible

I've got a DFX, using it in stock mode, I take about 1 second to sweep from one side to the other
it works real well doing that. I usually will go down about 7 inches that way

Thanks..I am using a 12" "spider" coil.. does that coil make any difference...?

All of the above post are correct in part or there entirety but my suggestion is to try and get a copy of Jeff Fosters "Digging Deeper with the DFX" . It has been my experience that all the the setting are dependent on each other to some degree, some more others less. this is a good book with lots of info and will give you a greater understanding of you detector.
