What is it with 1971s and 1974s?

It seems to me that coins from both these years have alot more silver content than other years. While I'm at it, I always seem to get a large number of super brilliant 1998s. So pretty I just put them in their own roll.

Stopped at a bank yesterday. They had three individual halves in the coin tray. The teller, flashing a couple of 40s at me, said pleasantly, "I don't know if you'll want these, they're old!"

Confused about your question about the 71's & 74's. They were not made with silver those two years.

Yeah, I know they're clads but on their face they look more like 40s than do coins from other years.

I know exactly what you mean... even though I know EXACTLY when I am looking at silver, those often have enough of a thick nickel-colored band that I check. I wouldn't even bother, except I have found many a 40%er that is grimy and looks a lot like those do.
