I thought that also, but if you look closely, the base is just a set of stacked rings, not a threaded spiral (like a bulb would be).
As for the red color, if this were a light bulb, I would think: chicken brooder light (even thought it's too small for one of those too).

Thanks creskol, My alcohol lamp is identical to the one on the left. The tapered fit of the glass top seals it. I'd never seen one with a metal top like the one shown. If this is one piece, it looks like you'd have to pull the wick out each time you needed alcohol?
