The Star of David and Hebrew Shin ("S") would seem to indicate someone of Jewish faith owned it.

Agree. That's a stylised Hebrew 'Shin' (the trident-like character) on the shield. In Judaism, the 'Shin' character also stands for the word 'Shaddai', a name for God. I would assume it to be a Jewish religious pendant/medallion of some kind.
