Submariner with a loaded firearm on a hot range. The bad guys never got that close to killing me.

The hole in my blouse (no hole in me, thank you very much) changed the way that we did business at that particular command. I don't know where things stand now, but I do remember that this was the only time that I was escorted off my own range.

I spend a fair amount of time at the range, and the rule is no one goes in front of a loaded barrel and no one has a loaded barrel while others are in front of it. Bad situations can happen in a fraction of a second of thoughtlessness.

I don't know that any of us would have acted differently if we were in your shoes. I'm sure the submariner never forgot it either (at least I hope so).

An officer with a map. Everything else " can" be fixed.

I am reminded of Ft. Leonard Wood, 1964. Basic Training. The day we were to throw a live grenade. My records showed I tossed my live grenade but they did not let me get within 100 yards of a live grenade. In the physical fitness testing the dummy grenade throw was one of the exercises. I couldn't even get the grenade close to the target ropes. A sergeant told me if I ever had to throw a grenade, to run in, drop it and then run like H*ll, because I could get farther in 4 seconds than I could throw it.

So, the day of the grenade throw they assigned me (OF COURSE) to teaching a final review for men just before they were to toss the live grenade. Those who can't, teach!!!

But they also made a check mark beside my name for the live grenade throw.

Later one day in field training, Sp5 Johnson, my platoon leader, asked me to do something for him. He asked me to take the dummy grenade, then hold my left hand over my head, and throw the grenade at that hand, right straight up. When I did it went out at a perfect 45 degree angle. Somehow he had figured out what my brain problem was.
