what is the story with nickels?

I keep reading from people that they are keeping pre-59"ish" nickels... Is this just simply because of the old age "numismatic value"? Was there a different composition back then? Any info is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think it's more speculation with rarity in the future than anything else. Currently, the nickel is worth $.06 in melt value, so we'll probably see the Federal Reserve change the composition of it really soon. Once the nickels aren't made anymore, value should start shooting up.

I consider nickels to be a waste of time if you are able to find silver in dimes or halves. If you search dimes and halves and consistently find nothing, sure maybe I'd give nickels a shot.

The amount of time it takes to search nickels, because they can't be easily edge checked, is just wasted time that could have been used searching dimes or halves IMHO.

Yes, some pre 1960 nickels can be sold on eBay for a nice profit if you are willing to do that. For me though, unless it is a key date, war nickel or pre-Jefferson nickel, I won't bother saving it. All nickels from the first ones made in 1866 to today have been made out of 25% nickel and 75% copper, with the exception of the 1942-1945 war nickels that are 35% silver.

There are some people who hoard nickels in preparation for the collapse of the dollar, but since no one is paying any premium for nickels, and the composition hasn't been changed in over one hundred years, most are waiting for a change in composition to stock up on nickels since most banks have a few boxes available for anyone who wants them.

Some people enjoy doing nickels and have had good luck with them, I personally haven't, but a lot of people have reported seeing a lot of foreign coins, about 1-2 war nickels per box, and many people have reported finding buffaloes, "V" nickels and I've even seen a shield nickel found in this forum!

funny i thought this was more of a hobby than time managed work....to each his own

I'm with papa.Try to do 4 box of halves per wk.But nickels are fun.Consider this a hobby.Not punching a time clock.
