So im no expert but recently i was watching a show on history channel called pirate treasure of the knights templar, and it looks very similar to a chest they showed in that and they said it was a form of a burial chest that the templars would use as a holy box and the 8-point cross on top is a common symbol of templars. The reason i say this is the cross on the top looks similar to the ones shown on the tv show. Here is a similar box i found on google thats much newer and made of wood and another much older made of stone.

Here are some examples as well of templar crosses.

unless I'm Misunderstanding What your Asking, or it's Sitting in a Public Place or Cemetery.
Or the Laws of your Country are Far more Restrictive.
I Would guess who Ever Wants To Own it.

If it's Cremation urn Like Stated, unless I Missed my Guess,
It was either Donated for a Certain Someones Ashes
OR Was purchased at a Funeral Home for a Certain Someones Ashes.

if unused & For sale or Found abandoned I'd guess Whoever wants it

It looks like bone boxes from the middle east. They let the corpses decay in a cave or underground deal, or a built sealed box when its all turned to bone they put them in those stone boxes. could be a month old or thousands of years old.
