This is a question the landowner of a property I'm currently detecting asked me the other day. :dontknow:
He told me that he found it years ago in an abandoned barn up the road from his house.

My first thought was possibly the decorative top of a weather vane or a cemetery fence. :icon_scratch:
It's made of cast brass, with an iron core. Any guesses on the age of the piece would be great as well.
Approx. 10.5" long.

Thanks in advance for sharing your theories,
Dave

Dang it! Beat me too it. I love this game. Whatsit?

A "game" would be one way of looking at the "what is it" forum...

And... I am sure many treat it as such.

I prefer the word "service" more so. heh

Thanks very much for sharing your theory on this piece ARC.
I agree, likely the top portion of a lightning rod.

I have also seen similar wrought iron devices in the old days used for drying multiple ears of corn.

Does the photo attached below convince you that the ID which AARC gave you is not a mere "theory"? :)

Thanks for sharing the pic of the lightning rod 'Twig Finials' CBG, I've printed it off and will present it to the landowner.

I've never seen these before Steve and yet most of the older farms around here still have a lightning rod on their roof. :icon_scratch:
