My dad, who loves detecting, found this near Appomattox Historical Court House (few miles from civil war surrender site) today. It weighs about 3 to 4 pounds, has semi legible numbers stamped on one side. Definitely seems to be iron. It is solid all the way through down to about one inch from the collar area. I have no idea what it is at this point. Any help would be appreciated.

Looks like a maul to me , used for splitting wood.

That is a cool looking piece for sure, and especially coming from the area in which it was found. Best of luck to you in getting this ID'd. Someone here will likely know.

My first thought was it's a broken pin from a 'link & pin' railcar coupler.

There was plenty of railroad in that area back in the Civil War.

That's why Confederate troops went there.

But Federal cavalry beat Lee's retreating Army to the supply trains at Appomattox Station and ultimately forced the surrender of the ANV.

definitely not a maul . . . the end that looks like it may be tapered is not tapered at all. it is a cylinder that has a piece of the lip broken off. the cylinder part of the "collar" is about 1 to 1.5 inches deep before it becomes solid.
