What is this?

I just got in from detecting at my grandma's and found this thing near the garden. It appears to be a flattened piece of copper with "1571" on one side and a big "V" on the other. It was about 2 inches deep and my uncle said it could have just been something my dad or he made when they were kids, but he's not sure. I don't know what the significance of the "1571" or "V" could be. Any ideas on this one?

Hmmm maybe some type of tool tag or something that someone got bored and beat to death with a hammer?

it's probably the thing you grandpa made...it really doesn't look like it could be authentic....still good find

Looks like a spanish reale almost. But seems to be to crudly made. Maybe a fake. Or maybe it went through a fire.

I would polish it up some and see what it looks like then. Was this place old like from the late 1700's or early 1800's.

The place is not that old...my grandparents' house was built in 1942 and an old railroad ran through the place in the late 1800s/early 1900s. My dad suggested it could have been a penny my grandpa (who worked for the railroad) laid on the railroad tracks and had flattened...I just don't understand the "1571" or "V". It is polished up as much as we could do it.

It must be some sort of tag stamped 1571. Hard telling, maybe somebody flattened a coin and then stamped this ID number on it.
