Part of a gravestone marker?

I'm thinking along the lines of a roof tile :dontknow:

I've tried enhancing the lettering in the Maltese Cross - but still can't quite read it properly.

Looks like it says "NEWYOR" or "NEW?OR".

It looks like NEWTON. Google found a IDEAL TILE in Newton, but it doesn't look like a manufacturer. (?)

The color suggests maybe a fire brick I think, like around a wood stove type application.
-I'm basing this on the color of the chipped portions, which I'm supposing would be closer to the original color

Looks like HOLMAN or MOLMAN to me.

I was reading it upside down too.

I guess I just assumed it was oriented the same way as the letters above the symbol.

I know of no word in the English language that starts with BEEB. Of course I BEEB could be the first beginning letters of a company name or I as the first initial and BEEB as the beginning of a surname. BEEB could also be the first four letters of a foreign word or name.

Since the OP is from NY, I'm assuming it was found in NY; therefore, the letters in the cross could be NEW YOR.

I agree with Benz in that it looks like fire brick material.

Neat find :) (Now go find some more of it!)
