If that is the original shape it is too small to be a trigger guard. So, what do we know about it? It's brass, the hole is a little larger than a nickel, It has marks on one side that could be roman numerals and the one screw hole is chamfered on the opposite side from the markings. Could it be part of a musical instrument?

BTW...

For those that lean toward the "Trigger guard" theory...

Trigger guards have more than one screw hole.
