Found this on the water at a beach in Florida. I don’t think it is charcoal. Shiny, black,almost sounds hollow. Any clue. It is hard and does not let go residue. This why I don’t think it is charcoal.

I bet it is volcanic rock as much of the ocean's floors are underground lava creators.
