As I was out metal detecting I saw this bird, a species that show up from time to time in the Hi Desert.... different desert then the High Desert. They are always similar in size and color but I thought they were some kind of eagle. We have Cooper's Hawks and Golden Eagles in the High Desert but the hawks aren't nearly as large or have the wing span that this bird does.
I have an idea what it is and made a code of my guess with the letters within this thread:
10-7-7-2-23-7
I'll expose the code to my guess after some guesses or if the thread dies.

could be a light phase Ferruginous hawk, northern harrier, or peregine falcon. Ffor much more expert bird id's than mine, try this birder's board. If anyone can id a bird from a few fuzzy pixels, the folks on this board can do it. You might want to take a field guide and a pair of good binoculars with you when you detect in that desert again. Noting the exact location and date would be helpful.

Well given the profile in the pic of it flying away, and the stated wing span. I will say it looks more like a Juvenal Bald eagle than anything else?HH
