Decided to get out this summer and hit some of these lakes in N.E. Oklahoma. Want to buy a scoop, but not sure what I should go with. Most of these lakes here have mud beaches or are very rocky...not a lot of sand it seems. A lot of the scoops I have looked at on the net seem a little flimsy for this type of shoreline, but I may be wrong. Being a complete novice at any kind of shallow water/beach hunting, I would sure appreciate any advice or recommendations.......

My only complaint against the Sunspot was the 180 degree angle of the handle.....I currently use the Beach Brute II with the added on SS lip. It is an awesume scoop. :icon_thumright:

Big thanks to every one you.....wow..I honestly appreciate the help and advice. This is a great site! Glad I didn't waste my money on those scoops.....I am definately going with one of these other long handled scoops. I really can't imagine not enjoying the water hunting anyway....I love every other aspect and niche in this hobby and I am sure water hunting will be the same.......

Willis, this is the scoop that I use it sifts really good, but I still use a floating sifter. I only hunt in the water and the sifter speeds things up considerably while finding the very small items that slip right thru most scoops. I hook it to my scoop and carry it over my shoulder if I have to walk, so its no more problem than taking the scoop. Then while hunting I float my scoop on the sifter so I don't have to carry it! I tether the sifter to my belt, and then throw a small decoy anchor over board attached with about 6 ft. of rope this keeps the sifter from crowding me and leaves drag marks in the bottom. Sandman is correct when he says its a pain if you choose to hunt the dry sand, but I find all of my good stuff in the water, so thats where I hunt.

Steve

Nice setup Steve. What kind of scoop is that? I was just out digging in the shed and I realized that I have everything I need to make a sifter, so I may go ahead....doesn't hurt to try it out. Thanks for taking the time to post pics, I appreciate it...all of you!

I have 3 of the larger ones but am thinking of getting the smaller lighter one soon. I am inland now so I don't need the huge digs of material before the next wave hits. If I was still hunting the coast I would get the bigger one. Or the smaller one if mainly hunting the wet sand and gravity was bothering me.

Has anyone had any experience with this one?
I have that one it works but kind of short a lot bending in dry sand for water i would go with a longer handle, besides when you do go wet sand and water you will have a good scoop try building your own its half the price . Picture shown is not my scoop but its home made and will last a long time .and if you decide to chose a new hobby that scoop will sell in a flash . Dd60

My brother happens to be a welder and just found out that he can weld and work stainless steel....great news...gonna try to make my own scoop or scoops before buying one..

That angled handle mod to the sunspot make's it look a lot more usable to me. That was one of the main things I didn't like about it. I also didn't like how the handle was actually inside the basket, so you had to look behind it to find stuff. I love the foot pad on the beach brute, plus it's light because it's aluminum. It also has a bend in the handle to make lifting it easier. With a SS lip, you can't really go wrong. I had the pro handle attached, but I may just have an aluminum grab handle welded on to it. That's just my opinion as many people love the SS scoop

Really enjoying all your comments...gonna help me when I start building the "Jeremy Willis Super Scoop" LOL

I can't seem to find the "Beach Brute" on the RTG site. HELP!!

Dan

BEACH Brute I I is custm made by RTG for Kellyco, you can only find/buy it on Kellyco website.

Bottom line, you will not be able to scoop all of the beaches you want due to the rock and stone. The only time inland beaches do well is when you can go deep enough to hit clay. Here in NY I find that beaches still in use have little sand while the old abandoned ones can have very deep overburden.
Due to these frustrations I will blend all of the options including scooping, hookah and my 3" "Coin-Vac". Just so you know, I am currently finishing the protoyping of a whole new line of scoops and will include a copy of the old faithful, Miller Scoop. The difference will be that every scoop we manufacture will be guaranteed for life. No questions asked. Stay tuned.
Good luck!
