I came here today to ask about some coins I inherited and now I see all these things people are finding. What is a good metal detector to get that isnt going to cost me a ton of money. I live in NYC area with roots in upstate NY (places I would search) Can anyone recommend one that works well. Also is that all i need? THANKS!

Depends on your budget.
Here are some great "starter" detectors:
Garrett Ace 250 ($212.00) 350 ($299.00) AT Pro ($550.00)
Teknetics Delta ($279)
Any Fisher, Tesoro, Whites in the 200 -300 range.
These are all good enough to become your spare if - when you decide on an upgrade.

Hello, detecting is a fun hobby. There are several to choose from these days. My advice to you is spend the most you can afford and learn to use it. All of the ones that are mentioned already in this thread are good metal detectors. How much are you willing to spend would probably determine which ones to steer you toward. Tesoro has a lifetime warranty and they make real good and light weight units. The Minelab 305 or 505 is more than the Garrett Ace series but they are real easy to learn and use plus are geared toward coin and jewelry hunting also. You will not go wrong with whatever you wind up with but I would stick to the major brands and not the stuff made in China that sell on online auctions.

have had Whites DFX, MXT, XLT, Minelab Excaliber, etc before.

a deal came up today for an old Fisher 1266x for under $200.
came with an extra head for crowded areas.

condition was very close new with very little use.
we'll see if 1266x performs good as all the raves it gets.

Fisher has some of the best starter machines too. Some of the best, not all of the best, some of the best. Don't forget Fisher.

x2. The best thing (I think) someone new to the hobby can do, is to go with someone who can show you the ropes. You will learn more in just a few hours, then you would on your own in months. That's a very generous offer you should jump on.

I can say i learned the teknetics T2 in a matter of hours and it works for gold also. Having a detector that has a visual signal that works separtately is like a second opinion. I really like it a lot and have found over 150 quarters and countless other change and one mens ring with it. Not to mention three gold nuggets my kid found with it.

I agree, the T2 rocks, but I think he was concerned on a less priced unit.

Great photo by the way!

For a starter machine the AT PRO would be a good choice you can get a better one later.
