It looks like the top "cap" section of a two piece button. Not only is the shank missing the entire back is missing. "the part that the shank was connected to"

The style of "E" doesn't look Fur Trade era to me................
 

Thanks for the help, in was in an area where I found some 1860 era Henry rifle shells and casings.
 

strange--------i've found 1 just like it ,with the same E in Florida at a 1700s site.....Some type of 1 piece button from who????????french or english----i will try & find it & post a pic
