I have had someone answer this question before but I can't find the information again =( I'm finding this rock a lot where I gold pan, but normally it's pretty hard to find. It's quartz with green in it? Also There can be green crystals, is it staining of some sort? 20180104_215610.webp

Green staining or tint typically indicates copper as copper oxides and sulfides show a green and bluish color. Often gold and silver are found with these minerals so you may be near a metals deposit. It looks like quartz mixed in with some copper minerals.

Quartz and Serpentine "greenstone"

very common in El Dorado County

The only crystals associated and green would be Vesuvienite and the best ones are found near Georgetown. Nice Garnets too.

There is some Olivine in the county as well.

Crystals related to copper and silver of specimen grade are rare to unknown in the area.

You found Serpentine and Quartz

My guess is stained by chromium oxide. What part of the country are you working?

Where can I go looking for garnet, vesuvienite, and Olivine in Georgetown? I remember you told me something about the green Quartz but I forgot to write it down. Thanks again! =)

California El Dorado County

You can tell if your on top of serpentine by the trees and brush

Sparse trees no ponderosa pine, there will be grey pine (diggers) the ugly ones with funky trunks and branches and buckbrush.

Thanks Goldwasher! Have you ever thought about writing a book for rocks and minerals in California? I just bought 2 in hopes that it will help me identify rocks.

Kinda looks of olivne to me. Its real hard to look at a rock from a pic tell what it is.
Just a guess olivine.

Get a known piece of serpintine n olivine campare under your miners lens.

Olivine is my opinion. I have found olivine with green crystals on a knob southeast of Rich Hill Az. I know what the greenish crystals are but I am having an over 70 moment right now. When olivine is metamorphosed, it is transformed into serpentine.
OK...remember now......Common with Olivine is Peridot Crystals....a gem stone....depending on clarity etc.

could be dunite. There are chromite mines in the area.

doesn't look like the right texture/grain for olivine.

They are all related .

since I know the area it came from I' m sticking with serpentine.
