What type of flint s this. Is it flint ridge.

Its an auction pickup in Ohio many years ago. Im assuming its native there but Im by no means an expert.

Whats the expert opinion?

It could easily be Flint Ridge

I found a similarly large, ceremonially killed lower half (square stem base) one with similar flaking in an Adena (mound) inhabited part of western Pennsylvania once & assumed it was traded in.

Maybe Smokey's right though.

I have found Flint Ridge at two spots other than Flint Ridge, which, due to the fact I don't need anymore from there, I haven't been to Flint Ridge this year. Anyway, I have found it 400 miles away on the Susquehanna River in Maryland and about 400 miles from Flint Ridge, in northern PA again on the Susquehanna at the NY state line (or thereabouts). It was widely traded.

Its very muted for flint ridge thats the only reason Im on the fence. If it was eye popping it would be more obvious of course

I agree with uniface. I think its Burlington. I think its a heat treated Burlington which has brought out the sheen and a more waxy luster.


I lived in Missouri for a number of years in the late 70 and found many relics made of Burlington. My then brother in law's grandmother owned a large farm in Crescent, close to the crecent quarry where the outcropping occurs.

Here in Indiana I still find Burlington, I also find Flint Ridge.

Not to argue with you but FWIW, I once asked the late (& much lamented) Dick Savage what was the furthest east collection he'd ever seen flintridge in (he'd handled hundreds of them). His answer was Lock Haven (Clinton Co.).

Susquehanna either way -- I guess you lucked out !

How is the translucency? It's not either or but I'd expect a big beefy biface of pink burlington to not have much translucency. The same made from Flintridge should have some translucency.

Not much, it is opaque everywhere except the extreme tips even though it is a fairly thin artifact.

Yes, I was thinking Dickson but I'm not "up to snuff" on my material ID.

Uniface, yeah, I thought it was awesome I found it so far away! My first piece was and is an Adena blade, I still have it. I found when I was about 14 years old just below the Conowingo Dam. The last piece was a really big flake found this spring on the OTHER end of the Susquehanna. Never found any other pieces. We do find quartzite, rhyolite, black Delaware River cobble points (dark flint) and argillite as the main materials here with a little Vera Cruz jasper thrown in.

Matter of fact, Dick sold me the furthest east Flintridge artifact he said he knew of -- a little microblade with edge modification.

Has it? Show it? You want me to show a comparative southern Dickson of mine? I know next to nothing about Flint Ridge material. Mine would likely be quartz or quartzite.
