Could be acts of nature, or could have been manipulated by man.

On some of your tree pics they have been struck by lightning. The one with the bark missing in a streak down the side is a direct lightning strike. Now some of the twist can occur in nature. Some of the more pronounced twist would have to be manipulated by man.
