I dug this in a field around some old houses. Looks like it may have a purpose with the straight edge?

Horse tack/ harness related.( Roger Ring for a driving bridle) Flat held leather strap. Or better said, strap supported the ring.

I would also say horse tack hardware. I have seen some of these ID'ed as Sword Hangers, but don't think it is that.
