Found on an old farm site yesterday. It's 2.25 inches long. The skinny end hole is threaded, but does not go through to the sloted area. The hole on the fat rounded end is also threaded and seems to have a broken off piece threaded into it. It is heavy and made of brass.
What is it? I was thinking a spigot of some kind or some kind of connector for a machine. ???

Spigot key.
Center part of a spigot or barrel tap.

IT IS PART OF A VALVE OR (COCK). THE HANDLE IS BROKEN OFF IN THE ROUND PART. Tony

I think it is part of a latch of some kind. You can see where it was scored by whatever used to fit in the slot.

If you go to google images and type spigot key you will see many of those mostly from samovar spigots.
But similar can be found in barrel taps and old style water spigots.key.webpkey2.webp

The threaded hole in the pointed end is for the screw that holds it in the spigot.
The threaded hole in the round ball end is where the handle screwed in.
The rectangular slot is for the liquid " whiskey or water" to flow through.

Are we sure about this? Anyone have a picture of one in use or an illustration? Thanks

Gas valve actuator with the porcelain handle broken off. There would have been a spring and nut on the bottom also.

It is a piece of hardware from 18th century furniture.

I can see why people think spigot/barrell tap, but those don't have screw threads in the base. Not sure what it is though.

I think it's a ball linkage, quite a old one...this is a modern one.

Here's one with a slightly different handle, yours looks to be from a gas cooking stove. Would've had a porcelain handle.

Of course thats what it is! It makes infinite sense now. That also explains the grooves worn in it...

Excellent ID! Now I can sleep tonight. :laughing7:
