I've not given much time or thought into how many little paper rectangles someone would be willing to trade for any of my priceless to me artifacts.
I'm no archaeologist but feel much more akin to one than a vendor that's for sure.
Just as an experiment as to what appeals more to who.. I would like to post a few items and ask what any of you thought a fair market value would be.
This is strickly opinion so I have zero bias one way or the other... please toss out a number.

#1 hardstone celt 5" in length, flawless bit on this one. No damage.

I figure if somebody wants to buy or sell it is their own business and they shouldnt ask how much their collection is worth if they really didnt want to know. By standing on a soap box and preaching it is wrong to buy or sell IMO just makes it worse. People are going to do what they want. I never have liked a person preaching their own ideas to me and then thinking I might change my mind which by the way isnt going to work and it is a waste of time and energy to try. JMO

Come on..
I wasn't talking to you. I don't care what you do. Why would you think I cared what you do?
Do you think I started a thread just for you?

Sorry if this thread made you uncomfortable. What you do is in no way of any importance to me "Rock" If you think I was preaching to you ... your are mistaken. Its my opinion..nothing more.

I like to buy from antique stores cause you can usually haggle the prices more.

Not the antique stores here.....I was looking at this nice, authentic hardstone 3/4 groove, have a couple chips on the bit but not bad, so I asked about the price. $950.00 seemed too steep to even try and haggle....

Sweet pieces GB, hold on to those. That's one of the finer celts I've seen.

NC that was my whole collection, they cleaned out 3...3tier display cases, and every frame on the wall which there was 23 of them. Not to mention my girls jewelry my big desktop computer at that time and few other items. Basically came home to a empty house with furniture. The worst part is this was before digital cameras were popular. It happened a little over 10yrs ago. So I had no pictures of any of them. Just a notebook where they were found and type of point or stone artifact, and catalogue number on the points, and if it was part of a collection I purchased they went on the wall with the location that I got from the seller.

That's just horrible.

I worry about that when I see people post pics of their collections, and they show you their "man cave' with frames all over their walls.

Exactly

Well this was before I started visiting forums. All I can say is and this is important, photograph your collection. I never did and even if I did find them it will be one hell of a time proving it. Soil sampling would be the only way to prove they came from my fields.....

GTP, the thief that got your collection should be prosecuted as a grave robber would, in my opinion. I hate to know that things like that really happen. Recently my neighbor had his house robed. I started thinking about my collection during that time. I figured a no good, sorry, scum bag thief would never think to run with my raised ridge axe, over my flat screen. I have realized how wrong I was. You are absolutely right about buying and selling to better understand culture outside of your state. I have traded a few pieces with out of state friends. Other than those trade pieces, my collection is North Carolina/Virginia. I want to know as much as I can about everything. The fact of the matter is, I'll never know all their is to know about the artifacts I find in my yard. I speak for myself, no one else. I'll stay with NC artifacts. I respect your view, and understand it. In fact, I thank you for branching out, and studying culture across the map. You guys are the ones that allow us to know, what we have in our back yard. Hopefully you will be able to build a collection from scratch, with just as much significance as the one taken from you.

No I didnt think you were talking to me. I do however want to point out that not all people have a place to hunt for their own personal finds and some cant leave their homes due to physical limitations. How can these people have a collection if they dont buy? I offer them a chance to have a collection and to enjoy the history. We tend to take it for granite because most of us have the chance to pull them from the ground where some dont. I offer them a chance to enjoy some real artifacts at a good reasonable price. Thanks, rock (small letters)

Apparently, I'm a a little slow. I didn't realize this was a pissing match post until settling in from a long day at work and sitting down for my daily checkin of who found what. After reading a few of the Celt vs Adze posts, I quickly decided I wanted no part of reading that. I mean... I'm here for fun, right? But darn it if I don't open another thread, one I posted on, and realize its much more than what I thought it was.

So my hillbilly hippy a$$ would like to offer a disclaimer. I'm an easy going person who enjoys the company of positive compassionate people...I'm here for fun, to learn and share a common passion with others. Would I sell any one of the artifacts in those pictures had I been the one to find them? Probably not, or at least not unless I had a big need for the $. More importantly, I don't have a collection. I have broken and/or worn points, a few ground stone pieces. Not a museum quality piece in the house. That alone gives me no right to offer an educated guess on buying and selling these treasures. But... Do I care if someone sells theirs? Heck no. I also have no desire to be an expert in the field and take over the world with my amazing historical knowledge of ancient artifacts. Unless superpowers are involved...and then I'm soooo in. What I find is priceless to me...it's about the thrill of the hunt, the amazement of finding something so ancient and passing those artifacts on to my children. If for no other reason than a reminder of all the days in the woods, fields and creeks having fun with their mom.

My grandfather always said the thing about a pissing match was that one man pisses high and the other far...and then they argue over who won. I didn't want my previous posts to come across as taking sides or joining the match. As a newbie here I don't know the history of this forum and who among you are noble and kind. I don't mean this to sound as if I'm complaining or trying to stir the pot. I realize we're all human, you're always going to have conflicting personalities and opinions in forums like this, just like a work environment. However, I hope this doesn't happen often...because it just sucks the fun out of it.

So there. Long winded Brandiwine has presented her disclaimer, her love for all man kind and her longing for this forum to be a world leader for peace.

Pass the peace pipe man. Pass the peace pipe. Sorry I also see try to always see the humor in life and the irony there just made me laugh.

That is all. Good day.

Ditto Brandiwine,
Thanks for typing all of that for me!!!!!!!!

You have the best outlook of any I have ever seen. I'll do what I do, you do what you do. Just be cool and don't harm me, or anyone else. That's it in a nutshell, right? Awesome!! Hippies always have things figured out, and simplified. That's the way the world should turn round.

Wow I come back to this thread and all of this. I was un aware there was a pissing match going on in this thread to. Hell the pissing match is almost over in Celt vs Adze.....with me coming out on top....hahaha...lol......you will always have a disagreement in a open forum and that thread sure ticked me off. I'm over it though it is a shame people do not know how to openly debate with all the facts. Instead it is your wrong. You have no clue, and other statements. I am guilty of that on the last thread and I'll do my best to not allow a gator under my skin. If that should happen,....well I would hope I would get a proper debate in the presentation of facts instead of your wrong, this guy is making things up and stuff like that. This will be the last I post of this but that is how you handle yourself. Don't discredit the other person and say they just don't know. Because the problem is is I do know.......

OMG.

Lol in small letters.....
