For some reason, I've never detected my own yard. Decided I would try my luck since I was bored..

I need some help identifying/dating a couple of things that I found. Before I get all the wisecracks...yes, I know it's a spoon in one of the pictures. Lol!! However, my family <mom & dad> have lived on this land for over 55 years. My dad seems to think there may have been another house (where mine is now) here during the 20s-mid-40s...

The little pistol appears to be a little cigarette lighter that's about 2 inches long. It's marked

"Continental New York" & is stamped "Japan"

...& the spoon...it is what it is, but I'm trying to date it. It's obviously not part of a field mess kit because it's more ornate.

Ideas?????

at first one for a second reminded me of part of a rivet gun but definitely a lighter bottom.

Flint where the screw is. Fluid in the other

The spoon is military, used in the mess halls in the 1930-1950's period(I think). The gun is indeed a lighter. I had one in the 60's until my dad took it away from me when I carried it to school. We were all playing James Bond, but I almost set my jeans on fire and got caught. Funny now, not then.

I remember eating with forks like that in the mess hall when I was in the service.

I can safely say that there wasn't a house there from 1948 until I built mine. This stuff has to be WWII era, I would think, but not sure. We farmed the land prior to my house being built. Found some other neat things I'll post later.

Austin, if a kid takes one of those to school now he'd be kicked out & God knows what else. Cool finds.

You're right...different world we live in now. I used to go to school with my shotgun or hunting rifle in my gun rack, which was in the back glass of my pickup. Nothing was ever said about us having pocket knives either.

Now days they would be expelled from the county school systems, arrested under domestic terrorism charges/laws and so forth, and unless you are able to get the stuff dropped, they could end up with a felony! While I understand the need for the laws, they get too carried away!

I agree 100%. Where has common sense gone?
