Sorry not an artifact.

Might be some leftover material... Hard to tell, plus I'm no expert

Looks like a knapable material we call Norwood here in Michigan. I see you are in Wisconson. Were did you find it in relationship to Michigan. Norwood, Michigan is far north on Lake Michigan just south of Charlevoix . It would be interesting to know if there is an out crop of the same rock over your way.

Sure is an artifact, just not one that advanced collectors would keep. It's simply called a "core piece" which is the remaining chunk of material that no longer produces any more useful pieces for their kit.
Often the chunk has other materials, geodes, snags, etc. that becomes problematic in making clean breaks but yours is just too small to make anything further with.
Not a tool but a chunk of material that may have produced several tools before it was discarded.

I don't think its a Whatchmacallit, it looks to me more like a thingamabob.

Id call it a worked piece of flint could be a core or might of broke when it was being made into something. I find plenty of rocks they were working on and then discarded due to a fracture in the stone that wasnt seen until the outer cortex was removed. So its a artifact just not a finished one. They make great fish bowl rocks if you have a tank.

I see no signs of being worked, in my opinion at most from what pictures show it may be a scrap off a piece being worked, Some people may be interested in collecting "maybe" pieces, I saw 1000s of them when hunting in Missouri.

Good luck on your next hunting trip.

It's really hard to tell when it is in this stage, but the ripples are from the shock wave of something striking the stone. With them being side by side and with out having it in hand to look at JMO man worked on it.:icon_thumright:
