What's the deepest you've gone with the Tejon?

Allright. So, I'm new to the Tejon. I was playing with it in the backyard tonight. I wanted to find a deep target. Something that wouldn't signal in disc mode. So, I turn the disc all the way counterclockwise past the click and started hunting. I found a couple signals that ended up being small stuff. Then I found a really nice sounding faint signal that signaled both left-right and up-down. I'm in vco mode too by the way. Also, there in no hint of a signal in disc mode. Just in audible all metal. Cool. Wonder what it is. So, I dig... and dig... and dig... The signal is still there. Both ways. left-right and up-down. After I reach a foot I go and get a post hole digger and dig some more. I was well past my elbow deep into the ground. My pinpointer wouldn't pick anything up, but the Tejon was still signaling a nice faint steady signal, Needless to say I never did find anything and I didn't want to look like a madman when the wife came home. So, I filled the hole in and went inside.

So. That has me wondering. Was there something down there or was it just some anomaly with the detector? I'm curious. What is the deepest you have recovered an item with the Tejon?

I believe it was just some anomaly with the detector. Possibly a EM field near by or a tiny bit of black sand in the coil cover. Ya can't really rule anything out. I have dug some deep sinkers at over a foot but that was lead. Iron might be detected deeper if it is rusted and not all detectors are created equal either. Check out the area again at a different time of day to maybe rule out the EM field.

I got a phone call from the Chinese consulate. They requested that I be a little more careful when I fired up my Tejon, as I was sterilizing them while ground ballancing. ;D

I have seen a dime come from 9-10 inches for sure,,the ground had about 3 layers of soil and gravel!!

awsome depth,,,and thats the truth,,,, :laughing9:

I did almost the same thing when I got my first detector back in 69. It was a BFO and I finally found that my good signal was a bottle top on the side of the hole.Talk about feeling dumb! Seriously though, I do have the same situation sometimes with my Tejon, in that I get that good signal that is faint and just will not quit. I have come to believe, and am pretty sure, that it is caused by small deposits of the mineral, Kaolin, that is sometimes found in my area. I know a couple of guys that say they have gotten signals from chimney brick that was made from the stuff. I have never in 40+ years had that happen to me and I have walked up on many a brick pile. I can also tell you that last Spring I found a small childs shoe buckle,(dimesized) and also a thin copper (dimesized also) button back , both within 10' of one another at a fairly accurate "estimated " depth of 10". I usually don't measure my finds but now and then a specially deep one turns up and those I take a little time and see if I can get some idea of the depth. Your Tejon will find goodies deeper than you will want to make a habit of digging , once you get the feel for it and recognize what it is telling you.It is sometimes frustrating when it becomes hard to tell if I am getting a signal from a deep deposit of Kaolin/whatever or a real goodie, since the Tejon does go deep. Lol, I probably didn't help you much with all that so you will simply have to set some limits on just how deep you want to dig. That's what I finally did and it took awhile for me to quit wondering about some of those deep faint signals I left in the ground. Enjoy yourself and don't sweat the ones you leave . You will learn soon enough how deep to dig for the deeper of the goodies to turn up and will know you left nothing but dirt. HH, Cass

Yep, I believe that's what it was. Just some mineralization. I have found several other signals like that when searching in audible all metal. They have all turned out to be very slightly mineralized rocks. I could actually take a handfull of the dirt, swing it across the coil and get the very faint signal. Amazing what this thing picks up.

Re: What's the deepest you've gone with the Tejon?

I stongly recommend you start carrying a short (approx. 18" - 24") steel rod probe with you. I've run across old iron pipes in the ground and wasted time digging over 2 feet to find out that's what it was. I once dug out an old iron anvil from 3 feet down. A probe will give you and idea of how much farther down your target is or even if there is a target much deeper. If the target is more than 4' deep I'm not real interested as its not likely to be a cache, but a very large, deep target.

I found fur trade knives in a moist farm field at least 18 inches down, likely deeper in black loam soil. The signal on the headphones was not loud, but strong enough and repeatable. I have also found large pennies 10-12 inches deep. Actualy I LOVE weaker repeatable signals. It often means good stuff. :icon_thumleft:
