whats wrong with my dfx

i put quarter on ground it detects it says its a quarter but dig hole and wont pick it up even with hole not buried in

Try taking the coil cover off and cleaning the coil sometimes it gets dirty inside from mineralization or salt or lower your Sens and do not go past Pre-amp gain 3 Dd60

How deep is the hole?

If your hole is 6" or more than not surprising. Most detectors will not pick up a coin at 6" in a freshly dug hole, even if it's not filled in, depending on ground conditions.
