What's you best lie?

The tellers are asking a lot of questions these days. We never want mention the word silver, so what do you say when the teller ask what you are looking for?

Since I search halves I have two lines I usually use

I'm looking for the very rare 1975-s...if I ever find one it will pay for my son's 1st year of college.

The other is

The we're a couple years where the die cracked and the tail feathers are missing. I sure would like to find one of these.

i use the good old "my dad collects coins, since he's old and retired and has nothing better to do." i always tell them in the middle man and i just pick up and drop off coins. works each and every time.

Re: What's you best lie?

I always tell the tellers the truth, 99% of them wont care and the 1% that tries it won't be consistent or they already knew.

I'd just be concerned about having to compete with the tellers you told the truth to. No reason to tip them off because you can't stick to one story.

I blame my kids & say that grandpa has warped their minds with hunting key dates.

This is a BIG mistake. One of the tellers at my best pickup bank found out why I was ordering so many halves... they are now ordering 12 boxes a week.

If they ask me about finding silver, I usually tell them that I sometimes find silver in there, but it's very very rare. I look mostly of the error coins.

Re: What's you best lie?

I tell the truth as I fear negative karma will rear it's ugly head. Plus, I really don't want my kids (or grandkids) to hear me lie as there is something about how we hold our parents and grandparents to a higher standard. It would kill me to think my grandaughter would think less of me.

I don't go overboard in my explanation, but I do say I collect coins and place them in the tri-fold blue books (which I do). If I am asked if I look for silver, I say yes, but finding silver does not happen very often . . . and as we all know . . . we have had many more skunks than big wins in this hobby. And, CRH reduces my stress; that is, this is a hobby for me (like metal detecting) and it has a calming affect after I deal with 1000+ teenagers Monday thru Friday (including extra curricular activities at night and on the weekends).

Maybe I am old fashion, but I like it that way and it has served me well. :icon_sunny:

Re: What's you best lie?

I say one of two things:

"I'm looking for older coins. And by the way do you happen to have any older bills, I collect those as well." This tactic yielded my recent quarter score.

or

"I'm working on a collection with my daughter." Which is also true, since she seems to think all the coins I find are hers (she's six) :)

Re: What's you best lie?

I say what Apush says...slight variation, because I do lie a bit (mostly for my own entertainment from doing this every single day).

IF ASKED WHY: My son and I collect coins (True)...silver ones). We like to fill up our coin folders (Lie, we only care about the silver ones).
IF: Teller says: "Do you look for silver?"
They obviously know bout AG...so I say "yes. It's an added bonus when we find it".
IF: Teller says: "Awww, How old is your son?"
I say, 5. (lie) He's 3. We all know 3 year olds have the attention span of a goldfish and dont care about coins.

It was really nice this past month, because I got to use a fresh line....STOCKING STUFFERS(LIE)!

I do all this in an Australian accent...for my entertainment only. What cracks me up is the teller chicks who talk slower like I dont know English well because of the Aussie accent. :laughing7:

Re: What's you best lie?

I tell them the truth, I collect coins and old bills. Most of the tellers are very polite and friendly and just say something like, "Oh thats cool, how old are some of the coins you find." The old coins I look for just happen to be silver,(at least some of them) but I don't let them know that.

Re: What's you best lie?

i'm very OCD and like counting and sorting things * its sorta like being a bank teller , only i don't get paid to do it.

ROFLMAO. Ivan.

Made me chuckle man. I'll start using this one in my Aussie accent and then just stare in their eyes as they glaze over from the boredom and confusion.

Re: What's you best lie?

Lying really is not necessary , I simply say I'm a coin collector , and that I like the older , and
"different " coins - All true ! If a teller asks me if i collect silver, i say- yes I do . Argentium.

Re: What's you best lie?

THE TRUTH - "I am a coin collector". When i am at a bank nearby where i have an account i always ask for some pennies or nickels first then i ask for halves. Doing this i am thought of as a coin collector not a "half collector". This brings up less questions.
When i am on the road at a bank i dont have an account at i tell them i do all sorts of coins but am asking for halves because they are harder to find. I also if pushed tell them that i like the old coins the best but like halves because they are easier to see being bigger and i like collecting proofs [mirror finish] painted and stamped ones.
I also divert by tellling them they are still making halves and i recently found a 2011.

Re: What's you best lie?

No brainer, I simply say I am a coin collector. Most of the tellers I have told agree with me that coin collecting is a great hobby, and that they are glad to help me with my hobby.

I used to share my finds with an older teller at one of my banks, as he was a CRH as well. They cannot open sealed boxes unless needed rolls, so I always got "unsearched" and sealed boxes. He got fired from the job recantly, and I do not see him anymore. (I think he was doing more than searching coins--- stealing some too). Though I am not 100% sure. He was nice to me, that's all that matters. I asked one of the tellers if he got a new/better job. the answer was "Not quite--" Assuming he got Fired.

HH everybody! Let's end this year with dream finds!!! :icon_sunny:

I have a similar relationship with some of my tellers, when they happen to find an old/odd bill or coin they will save it for me. A lot of the tellers just enjoy seeing how happy and excited I get sometime when they save something old for me.

Re: What's you best lie?

I never tell anything but the truth,

But I decide what truth to tell.

Yes, I tell them I am a coin collector. When they ask how much I find, I tell them odds like "1 dime out of $250" or "1 half out of $1000."

Then I try to include a line or two about my losses, including getting shorted at the banks.

Leaves most of 'em stone cold.

CRH'ing ain't for sissies.

Keep on Rollin' !

HAHA.. yeah in your area, silver isn't rare.. haha. That's got to be one of the funniest things I've heard from a volume searcher. LOL :laughing9:

I'm honest with it. It's because the results are not great here where I am. People will more than likely get skunked on 1-2 boxes. I really don't care if the tellers here search boxes here. Just don't search them and give them to me afterwards. I recall hearing some employee at one of my pickup banks doing a box on his own. Apparently that venture didn't last long for him or else I would've heard about him ordering more. The numbers here are not good. I have to now to 4 times as many boxes to find what I used to find years ago. If tellers want to waste their time to do a box and get skunked, go ahead. They're gonna make my day. People in my area will often read this forum and think gee, I'm going to do it only to find out that skunks are the rule here. Nowadays, it's a battle of attrition.

Re: What's you best lie?

I'm with Apush, I always tell the truth. I am trying to complete a date/mm set of halves. I almost have all the Philly/Denver kennedy halves (need 70D) and I'm slowly working on my proof half set as I find them. I love finding silver, but really I get a much bigger thrill out of finding a Frankie or walker that I need for my album than just finding one I already have.

P.S. I have a bad memory too, so I try to never lie, easier to keep the truth straight than to remember which bank is on what story. I remember the other poster where the bank teller asked him how many times his Grandma is gonna die this year.

Re: What's you best lie?

I am a coin collector, my grandpa got me started when I was younger. I enjoy finding error coins and proof coins. If they ask for silver I say I pick them out as well but theyre rare.
