Gremlin activity could have ground it off. OR it could be a mint error. Probably the gremlin's did it though. Look at it under a strong Magnifying glass to see if traces of date might remain.

There is nothing visible to the naked eye. Is it just me or does it look like traces of the date show up in the scan?

Try scanning it penny again and target the area of where the date is....see if you can get a clearer shot of that area. And that is what I was thinking...1948...but I can clearly see an 8.

When I have a hard time seeing something...I try to scan an area larger, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't...but try it and see what you get. Good Luck.

Well, now that I study it closer, I am seeing a 19?8. Or not? Monty

Looked at it magnified in imaging software. Yep, that's an 8 on the end, the base of a 1 at the beginning, the bottom of a 9 (obviously LOL) Could you slip it out of the plastic and shoot another pic? There's either a glare band on the plastic or a fine scratch that is obscuring what might be the remains of the 3rd digit. Oh, I am just so picky, picky, picky. ;D
